Greater protection for local heritage

MidCoast Council is proposing increased protection of 55 heritage sites – including items in Stroud, Stroud Road, Booral, Allworth, Wards River and Monkerai – and is seeking community feedback on the proposal before Friday 14 July.

A planning proposal has been prepared which seeks to amend the Great Lakes Local Environmental Plan (LEP) 2014 by making additions and amendments to the Heritage Schedule which lists items of Environmental Heritage. Each of the proposed items will also be added to the heritage maps in the LEP.

Stroud Road heritage items on the list include Stroud Road Public School, Stroud Road Community Hall, the railway bridge and the old brick kiln on the Bucketts Way.

In Stroud a number of private dwellings are recommended along with Stroud Showground, Stroud War Memorial and the former Telegherry school site on the Bucketts Way between between Stroud and Stroud Road.

Booral Public school is also recommended for increased protection, along with two private dwellings in Booral, three bridges, the Booral Soldiers Memorial Hall and the remains of the Allworth Wharf.

Monkerai Bridge is also on the list of proposed items as is the Wards River former school and residence.

The planning proposal is on exhibition from Wednesday 14 June until Friday 14 July and can be viewed on Council’s website ‘Have your Say’ page, or at our Forster, Stroud, Tea Gardens, or Gloucester offices during opening hours, and also at the Bulahdelah Rural Transaction Centre.

If you would like to speak to key staff about the proposal, you can drop in to council’s Forster office on every Tuesday and Thursday during the exhibition period from 10am – 3pm. If you’re in another location, call for an appointment.

Written submissions on the proposal can be made until Friday 14 July via the online submission form, email to council@midcoast.nsw.gov.au or post to PO Box 450 Forster 2428.  Be sure to review the requirements for submissions on the website page when making a submission.
