Before you burn off

While you’re not required to have a permit to light fire and conduct a burn off on your own property during the ‘off season’, you are required by law to notify the Fire Control Centre. The Fire Control Centre and your surrounding neighbours must be notified at least 24 hours before burning – significant fines will apply if you fail to do so.

Other points to remember:

  • If your property backs on to a National Park or State Forest you will also need to notify these organisations.
  • The Rural Fire Service recommends that you have water on hand incase the fire gets going.
  • Always make sure an adult supervises the burn off.

Permits to burn are required from 1 October to 31 March, however this can change depending on local conditions. Always contact the Fire Control Centre prior to a burn
