Great Lakes Council has welcomed today’s joint announcement by the Commonwealth and NSW State Government declaring a natural disaster as a result of last week’s extreme weather.
Great Lakes Council’s Local Emergency Management Officer, Andrew Blatch said “as a result of the declaration, Council can now apply for assistance under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRAA). This will help to repair and restore the road assets damaged by the extreme rainfall.”
“Council is currently carrying out a detailed assessment of the damage and the costs so that works can begin as quickly as possible. We will then apply for financial assistance from the State and Federal Governments,” said Mr Blatch.
Today’s announcement will also provide immediate assistance to other affected local government areas including Dungog, Eurobodalla, Maitland, Newcastle and Port Stephens.
The NDRAA will also enable individuals, small businesses, primary producers and not for profit organisations to seek their own financial help should it be required.
