Recognition for the Penn family

The Penn family from Booral have been recognised for their generous contribution to Bowel Cancer Research.

Mr Penn’s father, Lawrence Penn, was diagnosed with bowel cancer 23 years ago. The cancer was detected and treated early through surgery and his father continues to enjoy an active, healthy retirement. Which includes spending time on his farm at Booral, slashing fields on his tractor and putting the chain saw to use.
As a result of his families experience with bowel cancer, Mr Penn became an active supporter of Bowel Cancer Australia’s work.

Mr Richard Penn, Chairman of The Penn Foundation, was invited by the Board to become Patron of Bowel Cancer Australia in 2006.

In 2007, The Penn Foundation helped launch a fundraising appeal to establish Australia’s first Chair in Bowel Cancer Research, with a $1million funding commitment.

On February 25, 2015 it was announced that Bowel Cancer Australia will establish a professorial chair in bowel cancer research at the University of Sydney with a major boost of $8.9 million dollars.

The Chair, to be named the Lawrence Penn Chair in Bowel Cancer Research after one of Australia’s oldest bowel cancer survivors, will be based at the University of Sydney’s Northern Clinical School Campus. The Chair provides growth opportunities in bowel cancer and digestive health research and education, benefiting the Australian community.

Bowel Cancer Australia chief executive Mr Julien Wiggins said the size of the funding commitment will enable the chair and ancillary support to continue in perpetuity.

“It’s good news in tough times. Our funding will expand Australia’s research capacity and we hope the Chair will be a game changer for bowel cancer research in this country,” he added.

Bowel cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Australia.
