The following story is by Griffin Dunn. Griffin is 9 years old and lives in Allworth, he’s been learning “Taekwondo” a form of martial arts since he was 5. The following essay is a requirement for his black belt examination.
By Griffin Dunn
I started Toogee Taekwondo when I was 5 years old in 2010. I started because I had no co-ordination and I could not run without falling over. Since then my co-ordination has improved a lot.
I train at Raymond Terrace on Monday and Wednesday nights. I train in the kids class and on Mondays I train in the adults class as well. I like the kids class because I am the highest grade and I like the adults class because I get to fight against the adults.
My favourite thing of Toogee Taekwondo is the camp at Riverwood Downs each winter because you get to stay there for 3 nights. You get to train from 6am to about 7pm and there are special things to do like grappling later in the night. My favourite thing at the camp is the run over the mountain, last year we had to carry rocks and this year we made stretchers and had to carry each other.
My other favourite thing at Toogee Taekwondo is the beach training at the start of each year. Last time we went to Stockton Beach and we had to do extra training like running and situps and the plank.
One of the most important things with Toogee Taekwondo is making friends. I have a lot more friends now than since I started so that is why I like Toogee Taekwondo.
Note from master Robert Frost:
Writing this essay was a requirement for Griffin’s Black Belt examination. As well as the essay Griffin had to show his proficiency in all areas of his training, demonstrate his physical fitness, perform his pattern (a set of attack and defensive techniques), demonstrate step sparring and self defence, smash boards with various kicks and strikes and complete 8 x 1 minute rounds of sparring plus 4 x 1 minute rounds of 2 against 1 sparring.
Last Sunday 7 December 2014 at the ITTA Headquarters at Raymond Terrace, Griff was promoted to 1st Poom (Junior Black Belt).
Locally the ITTA teaches self defence classes at Tea Gardens, Karuah, Seaham, Medowie, Raymond Terrace, Nelson Bay and Stockton. If you’re interested in classes please contact Robert Frost;
