Restore State Library Funding – Please sign the petition

Great Lakes Council’s Mayor, Cr Jan McWilliams is asking all local library lovers to join a state-wide call to stop the ongoing cuts to funding from successive NSW State Governments and protect the future of their library. “The decline in financial support for public libraries from the State Government is reaching new lows” said Cr McWilliams.”Expenditure on public libraries from the State has decreased as a proportion of total public library expenditure from 23% in 1980 to only 7% in 2013.  This obviously is having a significant impact on the ability of our library to meet the needs of the community…

New Local Environment Plan for the Great Lakes

The long awaited new Local Environmental Plan (LEP) for Great Lakes officially came into effect on Friday 4 April with the Minister formally endorsing the plan as legislation. The new LEP outlines where different types of development can take place, the controls that apply and the measures to protect our highly valued natural environment.”Council is delighted that the LEP has finally been endorsed” said Director of Planning and Environmental Services, Lisa Schiff.  “Great Lakes Council is now in a position where we are able to ensure that future growth opportunities are available and that new development is both economically and environmentally sustainable.”…

An Ageing Strategy for the Great Lakes

Great Lakes Council is delighted to announce a partnership with COTA (formerly Council for the Ageing) to develop an Ageing Strategy for the Great Lakes. If you are aged over 50 (or are a carer for an older person and live in the Great Lakes Local Government Area, you are welcome to provide input into this very important strategy.  You have until Friday 2 May to complete the survey.  If you don’t have access to a computer and still wish to participate, please contact Council to arrange for a hard copy to be mailed to you…

ClubGRANTS funding round closes soon

Great Lakes Council is reminding community groups that the current round of ClubGRANTS funding closes on Thursday 24 April. The ClubGRANTS (Category 1) program is administered for Clubs NSW by Great Lakes Council and is for projects that contribute to the welfare and broader social fabric of the local community.  In addition, projects should be aimed at improving the living standards of low-income and disadvantaged people…
