Follow your nose to the ‘stinking rose’

Garlic lovers will be following their noses along the Bucketts Way over the next two weeks in their quest to discover the best of the Barrington Tops region’s burgeoning garlic industry.

Bucketts of Garlic kicks off with the Gloucester Farmers Market on Saturday 11 January, where garlic lovers will rejoice at the opportunity to touch, taste and buy an astonishing variety of garlics from more than a dozen different local growers.  Garlic tasting, garlic cooking demonstrations and garlicky value-added products will also feature at the market. Stroud Heritage Growers and Artisans Market will repeat a similar line-up for their Australia Day garlic-themed market on Sunday 26 January.

The much anticipated third annual garlic dinner at Roadies Café in Gloucester on 18 January sold out within days of being announced.  Fortunately for those who have missed out on the Gloucester dinner, Stroud’s Central Hotel has risen to the challenge of preparing a garlic-inspired feast and will host the village’s first Bucketts of Garlic Dinner on Saturday 25 January.

Food outlets and businesses along the Bucketts Way are taking up the garlic theme with garlic-inspired menus and food products. Look out for garlic sausages at local butchers, garlic sauces and condiments at local cafes, and fresh local garlic at markets and shops.

For those seeking the satisfaction of producing their own pungent bulbs, Jocelyn Colleran will host her Introduction to Garlic workshop in Stroud on Saturday 25 January. Jocelyn will provide a thorough grounding on planting, harvesting and curing practices and a glimpse into the world of garlic flavour and food chemistry.
